Instructions

Step 1
Preheat your oven to gas mark 5/190°C/375°F

and prepare and line your cake tins (follow the instructions below).

In an electric mixer or using a large bowl

and wooden spoon, cream the sugar and

butter together until light and fluffy.
Step 6
Add one egg at a time, beating well until the mixture is smooth.
Step 7
Sift in the flour and baking powder and fold it into the mixture. Add a little milk if it feels dry.
Step 8
Divide the mixture between the two tins and use an angled palette knife or the back of a spoon to level the mixture out.
Step 9
Place both tins in the oven and check after 20 minutes. The cakes are ready when you can insert a skewer into the centre of each one and it comes out clean.
Step 10
Turn the cakes out onto a cooling rack, peel off the greaseproof papers, turn over and leave to cool completely before decorating.
