Step 1
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease the casserol dish with one tbs of butter. Set dish aside. Pour 2 quarts of water into the large sauce pan. Cover the pan and set it over high heat. Bring water to boil. Add the noodles. Turn the heat to medium. Boil the noodles for 8 min., stirring occasionally. Set the colander in the sink. Pour noodles into the colander. Rinse the noodles with cold water and put them back into the pan. Set pan aside. In a saucepan, heat the milk on medium high. Stir constantly until steaming hot but not boiling. Remove from heat. In another saucepan melt 4 tbs of butter over low heat. Be careful not to let it burn. When the butter is melted. Stir in the flour, salt and pepper. Add the hot milk to the butter mixture. Turn the heat to medium high. Cook the mixture for 5 minutes. Stirring constantly. Remove the saucepan from heat. Add 1 1/2 cups of grated cheese. Stir the mixture until all the cheese is melted. Put half the noodles into the casserole dish. Cover with half the cheese sauce. Sprinkle the 1/4 cup of grated cheese. Repeat with the remaining noodles, cheese sauce, and grated cheese. Melt 2 tbs of butter in the skillet over low heat. Add the bread crumbs. Stir until all the crumbs are moistened. Sprinkle the crumbs over the macaroni and cheese. Bake the dish uncovered for 25 minutes or until browned on top. Serve hot.
