Instructions

Step 1
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. Set them aside. In a 10-inch ovenproof skillet, melt 1/2 cup of the butter over medium heat. Stir in the granulated sugar and cook until the mixture is bubbling and golden, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat and arrange the apple slices on top of the sugar mixture. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
Step 2
In a separate large bowl, cream the remaining 1/4 cup butter and brown sugar together until fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Gradually add the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined. Pour the batter over the apples in the skillet, spreading it out evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
Step 3
Let the cake cool in the skillet for about 15 minutes. Then, carefully invert it onto a serving platter. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
