Purees, Mashes and Lumpy

3 steps

In the UK health professionals recommend starting to wean your baby at 6 months. It's important to introduce your baby to single foods for the first 2 weeks of weaning so that you can see any reactions to foods. Don't worry about the nutritional profile on here as clearly these are weaning recipes suitable for a 6 month old. The standard algorithm doesn't apply but I can't remove it!

Instructions

Step 1
Peel and either mash or puree soft fruit keeping to a single food item a day for the first 2 weeks. Lumps in the mash is fine as the baby is old enough at 6 months to manage. If you have any worries puree completely and introduce texture when you feel more confident in a couple of weeks. You can add breast milk or formula if you like.
Step 2
Peel and chop hard fruit or hard vegetables into small pieces and steam in a small amount of water in a pan or in a steamer until soft. Mash or puree once soft. Omit the cooking water, but you can add breast milk or formula if you like.
Step 3
Aim for ice cube size portions which conveniently you can make in advance and freeze in clean ice cube trays ready for those busy days. Always defrost in the fridge before use. As the baby gets more of an appetite you can increase the portion size.
