FridgeIs there a difference between ground beef and minced beef? Or even beef mince, just to add to the confusion? The truth is that it depends on the retailer and the country. In the UK, for instance, “mince” is the usual term, whereas “ground beef” is more common in the US. It’s used for things like tacos, hamburgers, Bolognese, lasagna, and more. In some places, beef mince and ground beef are exactly the same. In others, there are some small technical differences. But once again, these usually depend on where you live. For instance, in some countries beef mince refers to pure 100% beef whereas ground beef can include fillers like soy and water. In the US, some people believe ground beef contains offcuts and organs that people wouldn’t usually buy – such as liver, kidneys, intestine, and so on. Rest assured that ground beef cannot be sold with organ meats, unless specifically labeled as containing organ meat. The only exceptions are heart and tongue, which are allowed in ground beef under USDA rules. What about all the types of mince or ground beef? There are quite a few options for leanness, and of course, the leaner the meat the lower the calories and fat. Extra lean usually contains less than 5% fat, and lean contains less than 10%. If the package says something like 80/20 it means there is 20% fat. Hamburger meat can contain fat added from sources other than the beef trimmings, whereas ground beef can only contain fat from the trimmings of the beef. There are lots of different combinations of fat vs lean within ground beef, and the right one will depend on what you’re cooking as well as your health goals and dietary needs. It can be a bit confusing, but the main thing to remember is that it’s important to check the label if you’re not sure what’s in your ground beef.
