Lime

LimeFridge

Limes are a small, round citrus fruit with a bright green color. From Mexican to Southeast Asian to Indian food, lime is an essential ingredient used by cooks around the world. Limes add a tanginess to salsas, marinades, dips, cocktails, and more. Zested, squeezed, or cut into wedges, these little green fruits pack a punch of flavor. There are several varieties of limes but the three most common include Persian, Mexican (also known as the Key lime), and Makrut limes. Persian limes are the most widely produced lime with Mexico being the largest producer. Aside from being a flavor enhancer, limes are also full of nutrients. They’re a rich source of vitamin C and antioxidants. The nutrients in limes may help to boost immunity, promote skin health, reduce the risk of heart disease, prevent kidney stones, and help the body absorb iron. Limes are grown year round and are easy to find at your local grocery store. When choosing limes, look for fruit that is slightly soft to the touch and has a yellowish color. Limes that have skin with a yellow tint are riper and juicier. Firm, dark green limes are not yet ripe and will need a few days to ripen. Limes can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge to increase their shelf life. At room temperature, limes will stay good for about a week, and in the fridge, they can last up to a few weeks.
