Butter Breads (Botter Broodjies)

A collection of cherished recipes passed down from my grandmother, Ouma Lettie. These classic South African dishes reflect her love for traditional cooking and her warm hospitality. "Botter Broodjies" translates directly to "Butter Breads" and are essentially savory scones or biscuits. They're a popular South African snack or breakfast item.

Instructions

Step 1
Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2
Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Step 3
Cut in Margarine: Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, work the chilled margarine into the dry ingredients until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 4
Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, sugar, and lemon juice.
Step 5
Combine: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can result in tough scones.
Step 6
Cheese: For cheese botter broodjies, stir in the grated cheese and red pepper flakes.
Step 7
Shape: Gather the dough into a ball and gently knead it on a lightly floured surface for about 30 seconds. Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 2 cm. Use a cookie cutter to cut out your scones.
Step 8
Bake: Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
Step 9
Serve: Let cool slightly before serving.
