Vetkoek is a traditional South African fried dough bread and forms part of South African culture. The word vetkoek literally means "fat cake" in Afrikaans and are often made alongside a curry mince, which is stuffed inside. A quintessential South African dish that is easy to make and incredibly tasty, especially with curry mince as a filling. Enjoy!

For the vetkoek dough:

Instructions
Making the vetkoek dough:
Step 1

Add the flour, yeast, sugar, salt and water to a mixing bowl.
Step 2

Mix the dough ingredients together and knead the dough.
Step 3

Cover the dough and let it rise for up to 2 to 3 hours in a cool dry place. Then start preparing to cook the mince mixture.
Making the mince mixture:
Step 4

Sautee the onions in frying pan with a little oil.
Step 5

Add the tomato paste, garlic, potato cubes, salt, curry powder, marsala, and the mince to the frying pan and stir well to combine.
Step 6

Let the mixture cook in the frying pan for roughly 5 to 6 minutes.
Step 7

Then add the peas and water to the frying pan.
Step 8

Cover the frying pan with a lid and cook until the potatoes cook through, about 10 minutes.
Frying the vetkoeks:
Step 9

Beat the dough on a flat surface to make it manageable, then cut it up into nice big sizes and roll them up into spheres.
Step 10

Fry the vetkoek rolls in nice hot oil bath in the frying pan for 10 to 15 minutes until the outside gets a nice crispy golden colour.

Allow to cool slightly, then halve the vetkoeks filling them up with the mixture and serve warm.
