Instructions

Step 1
Sauté the Garlic and Onion: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion, and sauté for 3-4 minutes until the onion becomes soft and translucent, being careful not to burn the garlic.

Add the Tomatoes: Stir in the crushed tomatoes (or fresh tomatoes), and bring the mixture to a simmer. If you prefer a slightly sweeter sauce, add the sugar at this stage.

Simmer the Sauce: Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Allow the sauce to simmer gently for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly and the flavors come together.
Step 4
Finish with Basil: Stir in the fresh basil just before serving for a burst of herbaceous flavor. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.
