Instructions
Step 1
Preheat oven to 400°F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper or silpat sheet.
Step 2
In large bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
Step 3
Add butter and cut in with pastry cutter or two forks until mixture resembles coarse meal.
Step 4
Mix in mini chocolate chips.
Step 5
Gradually add buttermilk, tossing with fork until moist clumps form.
Step 6
Turn dough out onto lightly floured work surface. Knead briefly and gently to bind dough, about 4 turns.
Step 7
Form dough into 1 inch-thick long log and flatten slightly. Starting at one end, cut triangles, or wedges.
Step 8
Transfer wedges to prepared baking sheet, spacing 2 inches apart. Brush with beaten egg, or milk. Sprinkle each top lightly with pinch of sugar (optional).
Step 9
Bake until tops of scones are golden brown, about 15 minutes.
Variations
Step 10
Orange spice: 1 1/2 tsp each of allspice and cinnamon added before butter. Zest from 1 large orange after butter is cut in. Glaze made from powdered sugar and fresh orange juice. (Also did not do a milk or egg wash before baking. Instead i brushed with fresh orange juice after baking but before glazing)
