Instructions

2. Put one third of flour into a large bowl. Add yeast liquid, mix well. Leave in a warm place for 20 mins or until frothy.

3. Meanwhile, sift remaining flour and salt into a bowl. Rub in butter then add, with beaten egg, to yeast mixture. Mix well.

4. Turn out on to a lightly floured work surface. Knead for 10 mins or until dough loses its stickiness.

5. Cover, leave to rise until doubled in size.

6. Turn out on to a floured work surface. Knead lightly. Cut into 2.

7. Shape each to fit a 450 g (1 lb) loaf tin. Brush tins with melted butter. Put in dough.

8. Cover and leave to rise until dough doubles in size and reaches top of tins.
Step 9
9. Brush with milk. Bake at 190°C (375°F). Mark 5 for 45-50 mins or until loaf shrinks slightly from sides of tin and crust is golden.

10. Cool on a wire cooling rack.
