Step 1
Place the blackberries in a saucepan. Chop the apples and onions, then add both to the blackberries.

Stir in the spices, salt and vinegar, then bring the mixture to the boil and reduce the heat. Cook the chutney gently for about 1 hour, until the fruit is thoroughly reduced.
Step 3
Rub the chutney through a sieve to remove all the pips, then return it to the clean pan and add the sugar. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, then simmer the chutney until it is thickened and the desired consistency is reached.
