Rinse beans and place in a large soup pot. Pour 4 cups boiling water over beans, and let soak overnight. Drain water. Add 6 cups water. Cover and bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce to low and simmer 1 - 1.5 hours or until beans are tender. Add tomatoes, seasoning mix, and liquid smoke if desired. Cover and simmer for an additional 30 minutes. Uncover beans and continue about 1 hour or until soup thickens.
