Instructions

Step 1
Chop the mixed nuts, add 1.5tsp cinnamon powder, 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg, pinch of ground clove along with 1/2 cup sugar and mix.
Step 2
Butter an oven-proof tray with melted unsalted butter and layer the filo pastry and nut mixture in the following order, making sure to apply melted butter in each layer: 6 layers of filo pastry > 1 cup of nut mixture > 4 layers of filo pastry > remaining nut mixture > 10 layers of filo pastry
Step 3
Score the filo pastry and place in oven for 180°C for 45-50mins until golden.
Step 4
For the syrup, melt 2 cups sugar with 1 cup water, 1tsp lemon juice and cook with an orange peel. Once it boils, turn heat low and let it simmer for 10-12mins.
Step 5
Pour the syrup on baklava when it is fresh out of the oven and top with more crushed pistachios.
