preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.

butter the sides of a 9-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.

in a small pot, combine the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and apple pie spice. heat on low until the butter is melted and everything is incorporated into a smooth caramel.

pour the caramel into your cake pan and smooth it out.

arrange your apple slices on top of the caramel, then set aside.

in a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. set aside.
