Courgette

CourgetteFridge

Courgette, which is also known as zucchini or baby marrow depending on where you live, is a summer squash related to cucumbers and melons. The zucchini flower or blossom is also edible and is quite popular in Italian cuisine, especially when stuffed with cheese and fried until crispy. Those beautiful blossoms also mean that zucchini joins tomatoes and avocado as “things which are fruit but we treat as vegetables.” And though it’s always bananas you see tennis players munching on for their potassium, one courgette has more potassium than a banana. When you buy one at the store, it’s usually quite small. They can easily grow to more than a meter in length if left alone, but are usually harvested when they’re immature, which is why we always see small ones at the stores. The heaviest zucchini in the world weighed 65 pounds or 29.5 kilograms. And the tallest? Well, it would tower over all your favorite basketball players at a whopping 8’3” or 252cm. Be careful growing your own. Of course, they are usually perfectly safe. But if your courgette tastes at all bitter, discard it straight away. If cross-pollination occurs, they can produce cucurbitacins, which are toxic to humans and can cause serious illness. When grown commercially, it’s very rare. Not only are they raised from hybrid seed but professionals ensure they’re not cross-pollinated with plants that could cause toxicity.
