Dutch Oven Biscuits

7 steps

Tips for Campfire Success Coal count matters: Aim for ~350°F heat — about 10–12 coals underneath and 6–8 on top. Don’t lift the lid too often: You’ll lose heat quickly. Add cheese or herbs: Mix in shredded cheddar, chives, or garlic powder for variations. High‑protein twist: Swap ½ cup flour for whey protein isolate and add 1 extra tablespoon of milk.

Instructions

Step 1
Prep the Dutch Oven. Place 10–12 hot coals under the Dutch oven and lightly oil or line the bottom with parchment.
Step 2
Mix dry ingredients. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
Step 3
Cut in butter. Use fingers or a pastry cutter to work in the cold butter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
Step 4
Add milk. Pour in milk and stir just until a soft dough forms. Avoid overmixing.
Step 5
Shape biscuits. Turn dough onto a floured surface, pat to ¾-inch thickness, and cut into rounds. Place in Dutch oven slightly touching.
Step 6
Bake. Cover with lid and place 6–8 coals on top. Bake 15–18 minutes until golden and cooked through.
Step 7
Serve. Brush with melted butter if desired and serve warm.
