Aunt Helen’s Meatballs

I make the recipe using 1 8 oz. jar of Welch’s grape jelly, to one jar of the jelly, 1 bottle of Heinz chili sauce, to 1 bottle of water, for 3 lbs. ground beef. Make my meatballs same way I make them for spaghetti and meatballs. I am sure you have your own favorite meatball recipe. If not, the Internet has a ton, or ask for mine. ~ Marilyn Sultar
Serve hot on toothpicks for appetizers. I serve them in a slow cooker and put toothpicks in a holder in front of them. For a main meal, serve with plain hot rice. Any way you serve it, it is delicious! ~ Marilyn Sultar
MSS NOTE: “In our family lore, it is said that my Aunt Helen could not cook, however, she made two recipes very famous in our family, this Sweet & Sour Meatball recipe and Strawberry-Banana Ice Cream for Passover. I am sure she made other wonderful recipes which I never got to taste. This recipe was last made for my grandchildren a few years ago for New Year’s Eve at their house and they really loved it! So yes, it is kid-friendly.” ~ Marilyn Sultar

Instructions
Step 1
Make meatballs with your own recipe, using the 3 lbs. of ground beef. To make mine, I chop 1 onion in my food processor, then add the ground beef and using the steel blade, mix for the count of 30, turn off, and repeat twice. I then mix in a palmful of breadcrumbs, panko crumbs or matzah meal, 2 eggs, a few grinds of freshly ground pepper and a teaspoon of kosher salt and mix together with a fork or in the food processor.
Step 2
Form into golf sized meatballs. You can also make it easy on yourself and buy pre-made meatballs.
Step 3
In soup pot or Dutch oven, pour in the grape jelly, chili sauce and all of the water. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Bring down to a simmer and throw in your meatballs, uncooked. Bring back to a boil, then simmer for an hour, stirring occasionally.
Step 4
Serve hot on toothpicks for appetizers. For a main meal, serve with plain hot rice. Any way you serve it, it is delicious! ~ Marilyn Sultar
