6 steps

• If using eaters rather than cooking apples, you may need very little sugar depending on their sweetness.
• If adding 100g of blackberries, reduce the number of apples by same amount.
• Double the topping because there is no such thing as too much crumble toppin

Instructions
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 180 °c (fan)
OvenPreheat
Step 2
To make the topping, place the sifted flour, butter and sugar in the processor and give it a whiz until it resembles crumbs. If you don’t have a processor, place the flour in a large mixing bowl, then add the butter and rub it into the flour lightly, using your fingertips. Then when it all looks crumbly, and the fat has been dispersed fairly evenly, add the sugar and combine that well with the rest.
Step 3
Place the apples in a large bowl and sprinkle over the lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon and stir well to coat the fruit.
Step 4
Add the filling mixture to your baking dish (9-10 inch and shallow). The filling mixture should fill about two-thirds of the dish if you are doubling the topping mixture or three-quarters of this dish if you aren't. Then top with the crumble mixture, spreading it out all over the fruit with a fork but don’t push down.
Step 5
Place the crumble in the centre of the oven and bake it for 30-40 minutes until the top is golden.
Step 6
Serve with custard, pouring cream or vanilla ice cream.
