Instructions

Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350°F/180°C. Line a square 8×8 baking pan with parchment paper and set it aside.
Step 2
Brown the butter: Melt the butter in a medium sized pan over medium heat. Once it melts, it will crackle, then become foamy – continue mixing the butter while this happens to prevent burning. The butter will go from melted to golden brown quickly, and you'll know it's almost done when the aroma of browned butter arrives. The whole process should take about 5 minutes! Once golden, remove from heat and transfer to a glass bowl. Let the butter cool for 30 minutes while you prep on the rest of the recipe.
Step 3
Place a piece of parchment paper inside of the 8×8 pan and crease it well. Remove, and spread the Nutella evenly on top. Make sure to keep it within the creases you made earlier.
Step 4
Place the Nutella in the freezer to set as you make the dough. This will make the layering process much easier.
Step 5
Whisk together the slightly cooled browned butter and brown sugar. Add in egg and vanilla and continue whisking.

Place the remaining dough on top. It's okay if there are holes and it's not completely covered. Optional: melt the extra Nutella and drizzle it over the top.

Bake for 15-17 minutes. You'll know it's ready when the edges are a light brown. The middle may still look underbaked, but it'll continue to bake as it cools.
