Originating in Southeast Asia and India, turmeric is a popular spice used in many Middle Eastern, Indian, Thai, and other Asian dishes. The turmeric root belongs to the ginger family. It has a similar look to a ginger root except with a bright orange flesh. Turmeric powder comes from turmeric root, and both are used in cooking. Fresh turmeric root has a sweet but slightly bitter taste. It’s not as potent as its powder counterpart so it’s ok to use a bit more in recipes—about four times as much if you’re using it as a substitute for dried turmeric. Fresh turmeric can be prepared the same way as a ginger root. Simply peel away the brown skin, and then grate, mince, or slice the inside. Turmeric root can be juiced, added to tea, or mixed in with stir-fries. Ground turmeric powder is much more pungent than the fresh root. It has a deep yellow-golden color and a warm, earthy, and somewhat bitter taste. It helps enhance the overall flavor of dishes and can add a beautiful yellow hue. Turmeric powder is also one of the main spices used in curry powder. In its powder form, turmeric is great for spice rubs, marinades, soups, stews, and stir-fries. Try incorporating it into curries, rice, salad dressings, and even milk or tea. Whether fresh or ground, turmeric has been making waves in the health community. Although it has been used medicinally for thousands of years in India, it's only been recently that the spice has made headlines more widely and has become available in supplement form to help with inflammatory issues.
