Yes, you can use ketchup instead of tomato paste in this recipe. And, I find that the flavor of this recipe comes the closest to boxed Hamburger Helper if you use bouillon mixed with water for the beef broth. Warm up 4 cups of water and stir in 4 teaspoons of bouillon paste or bouillon powder OR crumble in two 1-inch bouillon cubes then stir.
