Instructions

Step 1
Preheat oven to 450o F.
Step 2
Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.
Step 3
Heat butter until very soft or just melted.
Step 4
Mix butter with honey and buttermilk.
Step 5
Beat egg slightly and mix into butter, honey and buttermilk mixture.
Step 6
Add egg mixture to dry ingredients and stir just to mix.
Step 7
Stir raisins into dough (do not overwork the dough or it will become tough).
Step 8
Turn onto a floured board and form into a smooth, round ball. Make a cross in the dough by lightly cutting across in both directions (to “let the fairies out”).
Step 9
Place on greased, floured baking pan or parchment or silmat and place in oven.
Step 10
After 15 minutes, reduce the temperature to 400o F and bake for 30 minutes.
Step 11
Remove bread from over and tap the bread to ensure that it is done – It will sound hollow when it is done.
Step 12
Place on rack to cool.
Step 13
Note: For Brown Soda Bread, use half to all Whole Wheat Flour.
Step 14
Note: Quick (and excellent) Buttermilk substitute: ¼ cup Milk + ¾ cup Yogurt.
