Instructions
Step 1
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, egg, panko breadcrumbs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
Step 2
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into an oval-shaped patty, about 3/4 to 1 inch thick.
Step 3
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the hamburger steaks to the skillet and cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through.
Step 4
While the hamburger steaks are cooking, prepare the sauce. In a small bowl, mix together the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, mirin (if using), sugar, and water.
Step 5
Once the hamburger steaks are cooked, pour the sauce over them in the skillet.
Step 6
Reduce the heat to low and simmer the hamburger steaks in the sauce for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the steaks.
Step 7
Serve the Japanese hamburger steaks hot with steamed rice and your favorite vegetables. Optionally, you can garnish with chopped parsley or green onions for extra flavor and color.
