Step 1
Beat butter and sugar together and then beat in eggs, milk and vanilla. Slowly incorporate dry ingredients that have been mixed together, working them in throughly. Add up to 1/2 cups flour if dough is too mushy. Chill dough in a bowl tightly wrapped with plastic wrap for at least one hour but preferably overnight. Roll out only part of the dough at a time on a floured board, with rolling pin that is also floured to 1/4 inch thickness, keeping the rest of the dough refrigerated. Cut out cookie shapes and paint top of each cookie with some milk and sprinkle top with colored sugar or cinnamon. Transfer to a cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degree oven for about 8 minutes or until just beginning to be tinged with brown at the edges.
