Luthiers Egg Nog 2024
12 steps
Prep:15minCook:1min
Delicious egg nog that is a guaranteed hit at any cold weather holiday party. Watch out. It's a normal hard drink by Rockstar standards, but it doesn't taste like it. It tastes like melted ice cream, lol. These Will Sneak Up On You. Moderate how fast you serve these, or cut back the strength by adding more than the specified amount of the egg nog, or less of the "spiking juice". Leave the Store Bought Egg Nog in its original sealed container in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve the cocktails. It will probably go bad fairly quickly at room temperature, so return it to the fridge as soon as you dispense the amount you need for the serving you are preparing. Keep the containers on hand in case someone at the party has an undisclosed allergy to eggs, dairy, or any of the spices in the store bought Egg Nog. There are "lot numbers" and other significant identifiers printed on the label (and/or lid) of the plastic jug that may help in the off chance that someone at the party experiences exposure to an allergin contained in your cocktail.

Instructions
Step 1
Leave the (alcohol free, zero proof) Store Bought Egg Nog in the refrigerator until you are ready to mix a cocktail.
Step 2
Mix all of the ingredients for the Spiking Juice in an empty liquor bottle and set aside (in a place where kids can't access it). The recipe will yield a little more than a full fifth (780ml), so mixing in a 1 liter bottle is advised (so you have a little head space), it will make shaking it up to mix the ingredients easier, and possibly neater. Or you can decrease the amount of Everclear to bring it down to 750ml. The Everclear doesn't really add to the taste, it's just in there to increase the proof. I use it to top off the bottle of Spiking Juice (nothing says everybody is invited to the party like a FULL bottle of booze).
Step 3
Retrive the store bought Egg Nog from the fridge, shake it up inside the container it comes in, and pour 3-4oz of each type into one Bar Shaker (giving you 6-8oz's total in your shaker).

Step 4
Return the store bought egg nog to the fridge. It spoils quickly at room temperature.
Step 5
Shake up the bottle of Spiking Juice and add 1oz to the Bar Shaker.
The Spiking Juice, as written, will be 89.23 proof, so it isn't likely to spoil if left at room temp, but it's OK to refrigerate this as well.

Step 6
You now have a single 7-9oz serving in your shaker. Roughly 1 cup of egg nog the strength of a normal "single" cocktail.
Step 7
Shake it up very vigorously for a few seconds. It seems to me that the repeated shaking (shaking the nog, pouring it into the Shaker, shaking the Spiking Juice, Spiking the nog, shaking the whole mixture in the shaker) does have a subtle effect and improves the final product in a way thats hard to describe, but easy to notice. If you stir the alcohol into the nog (with a spoon), it can have a tendency to separate (or never fully incorporate) and it just doesn't work out quite as well or taste quite as good (some sips stronger than other sips, especially at the bottom of the glass). If you don't have, and can't improvise a Bar Shaker, perhaps try a wisk. I've never tried that, but I've always suspected that aeration of the mixture was part of the trick (why it just tastes better when shaken).
Step 8
Serve it in any Cup or Glassware that is appropriate for the Party at which you are serving the Egg Nog. You can serve less than the 7-9oz described above, but take care not to exceed the ratio I have described. It's plenty strong enough like it is, and making it harder (or dryer?) by altering the ratio won't taste as good. If it's that kind of party, use it as described to chase shots from whichever you prefer of the dozen-ish bottles you used to concoct the Spiking Juice.
Step 9
Optional: Grate a little fresh nutmeg on top of the serving if you want to go the extra mile. Be careful with your knuckles around the grater, though. After you have a couple of servings of this Egg Nog in your belly, the grater may pose a small risk to your personal safety. I have selected my Store bought brand to be very nutmeg forward, and just want to keep serving simple at the party, so I rarely go this extra mile. But if you're lounging around at the house, not milling around at a party, and already have a grater and some nutmeg I say go for it.
Step 10
It's a good idea to monitor who has had how much Egg Nog. This stuff is so tasty you may be tempted to drink it in glugs instead of sips, but don't. It's pretty strong, and it can sneak up on seasoned drinkers. Be aware and be on the lookout for unsuspecting novices among the crowd.
Step 11
And I hope I don't need to tell you - This Egg Nog is ONLY for Adults 21 and older. Give any kids present at the holiday party virgin cocktails - Straight "Neat" Store Bought Egg Nog. No spiking the punchbowl, deal it out of the shaker one or two servings at a time. Besides, it's best really cold.
Step 12
Finally, clean all your glassware promptly. The Egg Nog will leave a film on every container it touches, and it is Much easier to clean the glasses, measuring equipment, shaker... while they are still wet. Don't let it dry on the surface and cleanup will be a breeze.
