Instructions
Step 1
1. Make the Savory Beef Filling
Step 2
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef with the onion and mushrooms (if using). Drain excess fat if needed.
Step 3
- Add garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
Step 4
- Pour in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce. Bring to a simmer.
Step 5
- Stir in your cornstarch slurry. Simmer for 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens into a rich gravy. Remove from heat.
Step 6
2. Assemble the "Lasagna"
Step 7
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a medium baking dish (8x8 inch works well).
Step 8
- Layer 1: Spoon a small amount of the beef gravy mixture onto the bottom of the dish to prevent sticking.
Step 9
- Layer 2: Place a single layer of wonton wrappers over the sauce (it's okay if they overlap slightly).
Step 10
- Layer 3: Spread a generous layer of the beef mixture over the wrappers.
Step 11
- Repeat the layers (Wrappers -> Beef -> Wrappers) until you run out of filling, finishing with a layer of wrappers on top.
Step 12
3. The Crisp Top
Step 13
- Brush the top layer of wonton wrappers lightly with olive oil or melted butter. This ensures they get crispy and golden rather than drying out.
Step 14
4. Bake
Step 15
- Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.
Step 16
- Remove the foil and bake for another 10–15 minutes until the top wrappers are golden brown and the gravy is bubbling.
Step 17
- Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing (this helps the layers set).
