Instructions
Step 1
Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a mixing bowl.

Cut in butter or shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

With a fork, stir in buttermilk to make a soft dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead about 10 times to form a smooth ball. Do not overknead or biscuits will not be tender.
Step 4
Roll out to a 6-by-6-inch square. Place on ungreased baking sheet. With a knife, cut dough into 12 portions (see photo). Do not separate; leave biscuits in a square.
Step 5
Bake at 400°F until golden, about 15 min.
