Instructions

Step 1
Combine the first 5 ingredients in a heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat can cook down until onions are translucent, tomatoes are broken down, and carrots are softened. Add ham and any juices and cook down.
Step 2
Transfer the mixture to a large kettle and add 5 quarts of water and bouillon powder. Bring back to a boil.
Step 3
Add the rinsed and sorted split peas and stir. Bring back to a boil and let simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Step 4
Add the chopped kale, allowing it to wilt, Stir it in well. Cook for 5 more minutes.
Step 5
Turn off the heat and serve.
