Instructions

Step 1
Place yeast in 1/4 cup warm water.
Step 2
Add 1 teaspoon sugar, stir ans let stand 5 minutes till foamy
Step 3
Heat milk and shortening in a small saucepan. Let stand till lukewarm
Step 4
Mix sugar, salt and egg in stand mixer. Stir in cooled milk mixture and a pinch of salt. Mix till sugar dissolved.
Step 5
Add yeast mixture ans 1 cup flour and mix till smooth batter, then add enough remaining flour till smooth dough forms. May need more or less flour depending on when dough is soft. And firms around dough hook. May be a little sticky.
Step 6
Put on floured board and knead till smooth.
Step 7
Place dough into large oiled bowl, cover and let rise 1 1/2 hours.
Step 8
After doubled in size, roll out dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with donut cutter or biscuit cutter and use piping tip to cut hole.
Step 9
Place on floured parchment paper and let rise about 40 minutes
Step 10
Meanwhile, heat 1 to 2 inches of oil in deep pan until it reaches 325 to 350 degrees. Fry donuts till golden brown on each side. Use chopsticks or donut turner. Don't crowd the pan, fry 2 to 3 at a time. Drain on paper towels
Step 11
Make glaze. Melt butter, add powdered sugar and vanilla, beat, then add milk a little at the time till smooth and the consistency you want. I like it on the thinner side.
Step 12
Dip or drizzle doughnuts with glaze while warm. Enjoy
