Ingredients
6 servings
1 pounddried green split peas
rinsed, drained, any stones removed
1 ½ cupspotatoes
peeled or unpeeled, cubed, Yukon Gold are hard to beat
5garlic cloves
chopped
1 cupchopped onion
1 cupcarrots
chopped, peeled
1bay leaf
1 teaspoonblack pepper
¾ teaspoonsalt
6 cupswater
depending on how- or thin you like your soup
2 poundssmoked ham hocks
Instructions
Step 1
Grease the interior of the slow cooker crock with butter or non-stick cooking si

Combine the first 8 ingredients (through salt) in the prepared crock.
Step 3
Gently pour the water over the mixture.
Step 4
Stir well.
Step 5
Settle the ham hocks into the crock.
Step 6
Spoon the pea mixture over the meat.
Step 7
Cover.
Step 8
Cook on Low 7 to 8 hours, or just until the ham is falling-off-the-bone te

Remove the ham hocks.
Step 10
Allow them to cool enough to handle.
Step 11
Debone the ha hocks and cut the meat into bite-size pieces
Step 12
Discard the bones.
Step 13
Remove the bay leaf and discard.
Step 14
If you prefer, you can mash the peas, adding some hot water if the mixture ge too thick.
Step 15
Stir in the chopped ham.
Step 16
Serve topped with sour cream, if desired, and shredded carrots.
