This warm cozy comfort food was one of my favorites as a child and I'm so excited to share my mom's recipe with you! It's a delicious savory beef bottom with caramelized onions and warm spices with a creamy mashed potatoes and cheese topping you cannot beat!

Bottom Beef Layer

2 Tbspcooking oil

1onion
diced small

1 lbground beef

2 tspdried oregano

1 ½ tspsalt

½ tsppepper

1 tsppaprika

½ tspcinnamon

¼ tspground fennel

½ tspgarlic powder

0.5 poundbaby spinach
Potato Topping
Instructions
Step 1
In a large pot, bring water and salt to a boil. Once boiling, add chopped up potatoes and boil for about 25 minutes until they are fork soft. Remove from the liquid by straining them out into a large bowl.




Step 2
In the same pot the potatoes were boiled in, put olive oil and diced onions to begin caramelizing.



Step 3
Add butter, salt pepper and parmesan cheese to the potatoes and mix well. Once mixed slowly add in the heavy cream and milk and mix in well.






Step 4
Set mashed potatoes aside and continue mixing the onions until they are golden in color. Be careful not to burn them, add the ground beef once the onions achieve a gold color.

Step 5
Mix the ground beef in with the onions and add spices. Mix well.







Step 6
Add about 1/2 pound of spinach into the pot. Mix well until it shrinks to basically nothing 😅

Step 7
Now assemble the meat filling on the bottom of a baking dish.
Step 8
Top it carefully with the mashed potatoes and spread it all over the top.
Step 9
Top it with freshly grated Jarlsberg cheese and place it into the oven at 400°F for 15 minutes.

Step 10
Then broil the cheese if it's not already browned in the oven for 5 minutes.

Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 10 minutes before cutting into it.
