Satojoyu Beef

10 steps
Prep:10minCook:10min
I do a series on Tiktok called Kitchen Basics 101, where I teach the barebones basics, as if you have never cooked a day in your life, from the perspective of a mom. You can watch me step by step cook this and all my other recipes there! This salty, sweet & umami dish is a family favorite that I grew up making & eating. I’m half Japanese and remember my grandparents making this for family dinner. It’s easy to make & is a go to comfort food ♥️

Instructions

Step 1
Thinly slice flank steak into bit size pieces against the grain
Step 2
You should put your rice on to cook at this point - because this is best served over a bed of short grain sticky Asian rice 🍚
Step 3
Mix up sauce by adding Shoyu, brown sugar, grated garlic in bowl & whisking until sugar is dissolved
Step 4
Heat up a large skillet with enough oil to coat the bottom of the pan
Step 5
Add meat carefully to pan & brown meat to 3/4 cooked
Step 6
Once meat is browned give sauce a final whisk to ensure sugar is dissolved as you add it to the pan over the meat
Step 7
Simmer on medium low heat for 5 minutes to combine flavors & cook meat the rest of the way
Step 8
For the last 5 minutes turn the heat up ( being extra careful not to let this boil over, because HOT SUGAR is VERY dangerous ) and caramelize the sauce on the meat
Step 9
The meat will go from light brown to dark brown almost black and become the most delicious 😋 sweet, salty, savory perfection!
Step 10
Serve over a bed of white rice & enjoy! Easily converted to chicken or tofu! Yum 😋
