Instructions

Step 1
In a small bowl, mix the water and yeast. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes. Scald the milk and let cool to lukewarm. Add the cooled milk to the dissolved yeast. Stir together eggs, butter or margarine, sugar, salt, and ground nutmeg until well mixed, then add this to the milk-yeast mixture. Gradually add flour until the dough is elastic and easy to handle. Knead until a round ball is formed.
Step 2
Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl, and turn to coat with oil. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until dou- bled in size, about 2 hours. Divide the dough in two. Roll out each half to inch thickness. Cut into 7-inch rectangular pieces. Let rise again, covered with plastic wrap.
Step 3
Pour vegetable oil into a deep pan to a depth of 2-3 inches. Using a candy thermometer, heat the oil to 400F. Fry the rolls in batches until golden, 2 minutes on each side.

Frosting

Step 4
Cream together shortening, 1 cup powdered sugar, and vanilla. Gradually add the milk and the rest of the powdered sugar, beating constantly, More powdered sugar can be added to give desired thickness. Spread over rolls as desired.
