Instructions
Step 1
Preheat oven to 400*F.
Step 2
In a large bowl, combine 1 cup water, oil, sugar, and yeast. Let sit until yeast is bubbly (about 8 minutes). Stir in beaten egg softened butter and salt.
Step 3
With a stand mixer or by hand, add flour, one cup at a time until you have a soft dough that isn’t sticky. Knead by hand 10 minutes or 5 minutes with a stand mixer.
Step 4
Let rise 10 minutes in a warm place. (You can allow them to rise up to an additional 30 minutes if time allows).
Step 5
Prepare baking trays for meatballs and bread
Step 6
While the bread is rising mix all the meatball ingredients together (form into balls if time)
Step 7
Shape the bread into 4. Bake on the middle rack for 10-12 minutes or just until browned.
Step 8
Form the meatball mixture into balls (if not already done) and put into the oven for 10-15 minutes
Step 9
Heat a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the olive oil to the pan, allowing it to warm for 1 minute, then add the garlic and sauté it for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Step 10
Add the crushed tomatoes, salt, pepper, sugar and basil, stirring to combine. Simmer the sauce for 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, then season it with additional salt, pepper or sugar, to taste.
Step 11
Open up the sub and fill with meatballs and sauce. Sprinkle on grated cheese and return to oven for a further 3-4 minutes.
Step 12
Enjoy!
