Om Ali, or Ali's mother in Arabic, is a delicious Egyptian dessert, made with Milk and ready-baked mille feuille pastry. I learned this recipe from my dear friend the great chef Monica Sidhom, so she takes the credit for this lovely taste.

Ingredients
8 servings
0.25 Kgfeuille Pastry
or you can use ready-baked Om Ali pastry, it is sold at some local bakeries here in Egypt

raisins
optional

Nuts
like hazelnuts, almonds and walnuts, optional

2 litresmilk

sugar

5 TbsCream
divided

4 TbsButter
or Ghee, divided

2 tspcorn starch
Instructions
Step 1
Break your Mille fille pastry to pieces, and place them in a tagine (or a Dutch oven).

Step 2
Chop your nuts to little pieces. Then mix them and the raisins with the pastry pieces.

Step 3
Heat your milk over medium heat. When it becomes hot, dissolve some sugar in it. Keep dissolving sugar till the milk's colour turns from white to a bit creamy. Don't worry if the milk tastes sweet, the taste will be balanced by the pastry (I added around 5-8 tablespoons of sugar)

Step 4
Add 2.5 tablespoons of cream and 2 tablespoons of butter to the milk, and dissolve them till the ingredients are well incorporated.

Step 5
Set Aside 0.5-0.75 cup of the milk, and pour the remaining amount over the pastry mixture.
Step 6
Spread the remaining 2.5 tablespoons of cream and 2 tablespoons of butter over the pastry mixture.
Step 7
Dissolve 2 tsp of corn starch in the 0.5-0.75 cup of milk you sat aside, and stir them well over low heat till the milk becomes dense like a sauce. Spread this dense sauce over the pastry mixture.

Step 8
Place your tagine (or Dutch oven) in a pre-heated oven at 200 C for 35-40 minutes, till you notice that the sides of the pastry are becoming golden and somewhat separated from the tagine sides. Then broil for 3-4 minutes.
Step 9
Give it a few minutes to cool a bit, then serve it warm. bon appétit :D
