Garlic powder
PantryWhen it comes to essential herbs and spices, plenty of people think that garlic powder should be right up there with salt and pepper. It’s easier to store than fresh garlic, and adds extra flavor to your meals without lots of extra cost. If you haven’t looked too closely at the packet, you might have wondered if it’s just flavored powder, similar to what you’d put on popcorn. But garlic powder is just fresh garlic which has been dried and finely ground. While it technically should be very fine like flour, sometimes you’ll find coarse-ground garlic or fine flakes labeled as powder. Either way (and even if you love the fresh variety) it’s good to have in your pantry. Garlic powder lasts longer than fresh, and is actually a superior ingredient in some instances. You can of course use it in almost any recipe which uses garlic, but remember that it’s been dehydrated and the flavor can be intense. So always start with a little and add more as needed. The powdered form is also a great option if you want to make dry rubs for barbecued meats, want to mix it into salad dressing or burger sauce, or if you want to season something like roasted potatoes. Garlic powder is also much less likely to burn than fresh garlic, so it works well when you need to use the flavor but also use a high heat. It’s worth noting that because it’s dehydrated and powdered, it does have slightly less nutritional value than fresh – but it’s still a powerful ingredient to fight off colds and infections.
