Instructions

Step 1
In a large pot over medium heat, saute onion in oil until translucent. Add jalapeno, ginger, and garlic and cook, stirring, for a few minutes.
Step 2
Add all ingredients except kale and bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer, covered, until split peas are very soft, about 45 minutes.
Step 3
If desired, use blender or immersion blender to puree in batches, then return to pot. Stir in chopped kale and let the heat wilt it.
Step 4
Serve with Greek yogurt, lime juice and/or hot sauce.
