Best Korean Braised Tofu
2 Keys to the Best Korean Braised Tofu
1. Get the tofu golden brown. Be patient and cook it until it’s almost pan-fried. This helps the tofu stay firm with a slightly crispy texture instead of getting mushy when the sauce is added.
2. Add water to the sauce. The water slowly evaporates in the pan, giving the sauce time to soak into the tofu without burning.
INGREDIENTS
•1 block firm tofu
•½ sweet onion, thinly sliced
•Avocado oil, for cooking
•Salt & pepper, to taste
•1 tbsp sesame oil
SAUCE
•4 tbsp soy sauce
•3 tbsp agave syrup
•1 tbsp crushed garlic
•1 tbsp Korean red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
•¼ cup water
•3 green onions, thinly chopped
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Cut tofu into ½-inch thick squares. This keeps it from getting too salty and makes it easier to handle without breaking.
2. Heat a medium pan over medium heat and add a little avocado oil. Add tofu and season lightly with salt and pepper.
3. Cook for about 5 minutes per side, until deeply golden brown and almost pan-fried.
4. Make the sauce: Mix soy sauce, agave syrup, crushed garlic, gochugaru, water, and thinly chopped green onions.
5. Pour the sauce directly over the tofu and let it simmer for about 7-10 minutes, gently spooning the sauce over the tofu as it reduces.
6. Add the thinly sliced sweet onion and cook for another minute.
7. Turn off the heat and drizzle with 1 tbsp sesame oil. Gently spoon the sauce over the tofu before serving.
