Instructions
Step 1
Wash and soak the rice and daal for a bit. Prepare the masala in the meantime.
Step 2
Fry sliced onion in some oil with zeera until it changes colour and then add ginger and garlic paste and fry for couple mins (the more brown the onion gets, the stronger the colour of your rice at the end)
Step 3
Add chopped tomato and green chillies along with salt and garam masala and cook until masala is ready and leaves oil (if you want it more bland, only add 1 or 2 green chillies)
Step 4
Add 2 cups water and chicken stock cube
Step 5
Once the water starts boiling and reducing, cover and cook on low heat for 15mins until rice and daal are cooked through (If you want khichdi to be more runny, add one extra cup of hot/boiling water and cook for further 5mins until combined)
Step 6
Serve warm with plain yoghurt.
