Southern Style Chicken & Waffles
12 steps
Prep:1h 15minCook:25min
Today we’re whipping up some southern style chicken and waffles! I learned this recipe from watching my grandmother in the kitchen when I was younger.
What a great way to start off a Sunday waking up the smell of sweet waffles and savory fried chicken. It’s the perfect mix! Especially when you pair it with a really good maple syrup. I love Aunt Jemima but for this one I used a bourbon maple syrup that just sent this meal over the top!
The strawberries and confectioners sugar was the perfect addition to an already perfect meal.

Instructions
Marinate your chicken.
Step 1
Clean your chicken & pat it dry.
Step 2
Combine 1 1/2 cups of buttermilk, 1/2 cup of pickle juice & 1/2 cup of water in a plastic bag. Add in your chicken.
Step 3
Shake the chicken to coat and place it in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
Make your waffle mix
Step 4
Grab two separate bowls
Step 5
In one bowl mix your dry ingredients. 2 cups of flower, 1 1/2 cups of sugar & 1 tsp of salt.
Step 6
In another bowl mix your wet ingredients. 2 eggs, 1 1/2 cups of milk, 1 tbsp vanilla extract, 1/2 cup of melted butter.
Step 7
Pour the wet mix into the dry bowl and blend. Let this rest for 5 minutes. Cook your waffles until desired firmness.
Cook your chicken
Step 8
Preheat vegetable oil to 350 degrees F.
Step 9
Mix your favorite seasonings with 1 cup of flour. I used 1 tbsp of each seasoning listed above.
Step 10
Take your chicken out of buttermilk mix and evenly coat it with the flour mix. Grandma used to pour all of the flour in a grocery bag and shake it. I used a metal bowl and gloves to make sure it’s evenly coated. Shake off the excess!
Step 11
Drop it in the preheated grease.
Step 12
Serve.
