Grandma Silver's Tzimmes

This is my Grandmother’s recipe and the only one I really enjoy. It is not a sweet Tzimmes, but a savory one. I have never heard of anyone else making this type of Tzimmes. Try it, you may like it! ~ Marilyn Sultar

Instructions

Step 1
First make a batter for potato kugel:

Grate 4 potatoes, with 1 onion.
Step 3
Drain. Add egg, flour (or Matzah Meal), oil, salt & pepper to taste.

Mix well.

Pour into 8x8 inch GREASED pan (I like to make the kugel in a

disposable aluminum pan) and bake at 350 degrees for 1/2 hour.
Step 7
Meanwhile, peel and wash carrots. Cut into chunks. Wash celery and cut into chunks.
Step 8
Peel and wash 1-2 Sweet Potatoes or Yams. Cut into chunks.
Step 9
Pour into a 9x13 inch pan and put in just enough water to barely cover. Put in 350 degree F.. oven for 2 hours or until the veggies are soft. Note: I don’t recall it taking 2 hrs. The recipe originally said half an hour. The veggies after half an hour in the stove in our new apartment, the veggies were still very hard. So, I set it for another 1/2 hour. Still not soft enough to mash. So, I set it for another 1/2 hour.
Step 10
Add flour, sugar, and salt and pepper after vegetables are soft.
Step 11
Then pour partially baked potato kugel on top. Continue baking for another

15 minutes or until the kugel is done, but not brown on top.
Step 13
Take the Tzimmes out of the oven and pour mixture into a large bowl.
Step 14
Mash everything together with potato masher.
Step 15
Serve hot.
