Spicy Tuna Yaki Onigiri

A great addition to your lunchtime line up! This easy recipe takes less than 10 minutes to recreate. Spicy tuna yaki onigiri is a delicious variation of the traditional Japanese dish yaki onigiri. It involves grilling or pan-frying (or air frying) rice balls that are filled with a spicy tuna mixture.

Instructions

Step 1
In a bowl, mix together the canned tuna, mayo and hot sauce. Set this aside.
Step 2
Add rice (short grain white rice works the best because it is more sticky compared to jasmine rice) into the mold until it's halfway full, creating a slight hollow for placing the spicy tuna mixture.
Step 3
Place a spoonful of the spicy tuna mixture, then proceed to fill the remaining space in the mold with more rice.
Step 4
Place the lid on top and press down securely.
Step 5
Alternatively, you can use your hands to create your own onigiri by sandwiching the spicy tuna mix between two layers of rice.
Step 6
Brush the top of the onigiri (rice balls) with hot sauce and then sesame oil.
Step 7
Air fry at 400F for 5 minutes. You could also pan-fry the rice balls in some oil until both sides are crispy. If using this method, brush hot sauce and sesame oil on the rice balls after pan-frying.
