Step 1
Measure both daals, wash in cold water together until most of the starch has been removed
Step 2
Put the water into a saucepan. Add salt, haldi and chillies. Add the washed daals and bring water to the boil - take care it does not boil over
Step 3
Stir daal with a wooden spoon and turn down the heat. Let the daal simmer, stirring intermittently
Step 4
As the daal simmers, it will start to slowly thicken. Simmer for 30 mins
Step 5
Add the butter for creaminess
For turka:
Step 6
Melt butter in a separate pan. Add the mustard seeds. Then add the garlic and onion and fry gently until golden brown
Step 7
Add tomatos, methi and garam masala. Add haldi, salt and dried chilli flakes for taste if needed
Step 8
Pour turka into the daal mixture. Continue to simmer until a good consistency
