Step 1
In a 3-quart saucepan over medium-low heat, cook onions and garlic in butter until tender and golden brown stirring frequently (~20 minutes).

Step 2
Stir in tomato juice, broth and picante sauce. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer uncovered 20 minutes.
Step 3
Ladle into soup bowls; sprinkle with croutons and cheese. Serve with additional picante sauce.
