Mushroomy heaven
Picture this: you're walking in the woods along a worn-out path in search for hidden treasure. What you don't know is that 5 metres away there's an inconspicuous rock that you'll trip over.
You faceplant into a bunch of leaves. Disregarding several injuries, you pick one and sniff it out of curiosity. It smells like a leaf. You scrunch it up and take a cautious bite. It's sour! Interesting. Pocket some of them.
Ooh! Look! Reach out and grab some wild garlic. Yum. Goes well with this wonderful greenery you've just discovered.
You finally get up and continue along the path with an initial limp. It starts to rain. After a couple more steps, you hear a few pops. And then a couple more. You look around, concerned. But it's just a colony of plump mushrooms rapidly popping out of the rich, moist soil. You pluck a trio of them and whistle your way down the path in satisfaction.
As you're skipping along, you catch a glimpse of some black-and-white patches behind thick trees. Moments later, a cow stands before you and you freeze. It's staring. And chewing. It licks its nostril. You creep around it, followed by its empty gaze.
But the encounter will soon prove to be worth it, as behind the cow there's civilisation. A farm! Garlic in one hand, mushroom in the other and spinach in your mouth, you proceed to the gate in search of the cherry on top of your upcoming grand culinary invention.
You chat up the farmer who takes you into one of the barns. He hands you a bottle of fresh cream. "For your travels." You thank him and take a sip. Eureka! You stuff more spinach into your mouth and the farmer takes a step back, clearly shocked by your cavemanly inhaling of the food. But you're not paying attention to him. You need to take a bite of the mushrooms. And add a bit of garlic. And there it is --- mushroomy heaven.
You've found the treasure.
