Instructions

Step 1
In a bowl or stand mixer, combine the yeast, warm water, and half of the sugar. Set aside until it becomes foamy on top. About 5-10 mins.
Step 2
Sift together flour, salt, and spices. Set aside.
Step 3
Into the yeast mixture, add in the milk, remaining sugar, egg, and vanilla extract or vanilla bean. Mix well.
Step 4
Using a stand mixer with a dough hook, slowly start adding the flour mixture into the wet ingredients while it is on a low/medium speed. Once the dough starts to come together, slowly add in the room temperature butter.
Step 5
When the dough begins to pull away from the sides, place it in a large, greased bowl and cover it with a towel or plastic wrap. Let rise for 2 hours.
Step 6
Once the dough has doubled in size, roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thick and cut into squares or rectangles.
Step 7
Place them on a sheet pan and cover well. Let them rise for another 30-45 mins.
Step 8
Heat your oil to 350F while you wait.
Step 9
Fry them until golden brown on each side. Top with powdered sugar, fill them with Nutella, or serve with a dipping sauce of your choice. Enjoy!
