Instructions

Step 1
Put the ingredients into a blender in the order listed with 1/2 cup of the ice and reserving the seltzer.
Step 2
Puree until smooth, stopping to push the ingredients toward the blade; once the machine gets moving, stop once or twice more to scrape down the sides. Adjust the texture with more ice or a little seltzer. Serve immediately.
Step 3
In place of the banana, try pear or honeydew melon (1 cup chopped fruit). Spinach, watercress, or arugula can also be substituted for the kale. Increase the cucumber to 1 1/4 cups and skip the apple.
