Ingredients

10mlextra-virgin olive oil
½ cupred onion
minced, or yellow
2cloves garlic
minced
1 cuptomato sauce
2 Tablespoonsapple cider vinegar
1 Tablespoonspure maple syrup
to taste
1 teaspoonsblackstrap molasses
to taste
½ teaspoonfine sea salt
to taste
1 teaspoonmustard powder
¾ teaspoonsmoked paprika
or to taste
½ teaspoonblack pepper
freshly ground
sriracha sauce
or other hot
cayenne pepper

Instructions
Step 1
1. In a medium saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and sauté for 4 to 5 minutes, until the onion is translucent.
Step 2
2. Stir in the tomato sauce, vinegar, maple syrup, molasses, salt, mustard powder, paprika, black pepper, Sriracha and cayenne (if using).
Step 3
3. Simmer over low-medium heat for 5-10 minutes, until thickened.
Step 4
4. Carefully transfer the sauce to a blender and blend on low until smooth.
Step 5
5. This sauce will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or you can freeze it for up to 1 month. I like to portion it into a silicone mini ice cube tray, freeze it and then pop the cubes out and store them in a freezer-safe container.
