Spiced Cabbage-Sausage Casserole

Ingredients
4 servings
1 lbkielbasa
or other fully-cooked smoked sausage, preferably spicy
2 Tbspbutter
2onions
julienne cut
0.5 headcabbage
medium, shredded
½ cupchicken broth
1bay leaf
1apple
pared and julienne cut
2 Tbspbrown sugar
1 tspsalt
1 tspsmoked paprika
½ tspwhite pepper
¼ tsponion powder
¼ tspgarlic powder
¼ tspcayenne pepper
or to taste
¼ tspblack pepper
¼ tspdried thyme
¼ tspdried basil
Instructions
Step 1
Cut sausage into 3-inch lengths on the diagonal.
Step 2
In a large, heavy frying pan, heat butter. Add the onions, cabbage, chicken broth and bay leaf. Bring to a boil and cook for 5 minutes.
Step 3
Add the remaining ingredients and mix well, then nestle the sausage into the cabbage mixture.
Step 4
Cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until the cabbage has reached desired tenderness and sausage is hot.
Step 5
Serve portions of the cabbage topped with pieces of sausage.
